In August of 1997 Thomas George, a student at the newly opened Urbana High School and his father, William, began "recruiting" families from the Urbana area, upper Montgomery County (mainly Poolesville), and as far away as Gettysburg to form an ice hockey Club team at the new high school. Thomas had been asked to play for another high school team but wanted to play hockey "at his school". It took the Georges fourteen months to round up 17 players to field a "provisional" (i.e., not all players from one school) team. With guidance from Thomas Johnson's club President, the Urbana Hockey Club joined the Maryland Scholastic Hockey League (MSHL) as the tenth club (along with Bishop Walsh, Thomas Johnson, Walkersville, Linganore, Brunswick, Frederick, and two other schools) to be admitted to the Western Conference (and 61st club to join the MSHL overall) and played their first game on December 4, 1998 against TJ. Although the 1998-99 team did not fair very well, they got their first win against Bishop Walsh (a Catholic school from Cumberland) in early 1999. The Club remained a "provision" team until the 2004-05 season when they finally had enough Urbana players to support a full strength team. |
Trevor Stears was the original Head Coach for the 1998-99 season followed by Bill Barse for one season, and Ken Craigie until 2002-03 when Randy Fritsch joined as an Assistant. Mr. Craigie turned over the Club's coaching duties full time to Mr. Fritsch during the 2003-04 season and Mr. Fritsch (whose son, Jeff, was the Captain of the 2006-07 team) remained the Head Coach until the 2008-09 year when Joe Boisvert took over. |
